Today students took part in activities focused on reflecting and remembering those affected by the war in Ukraine and raising awareness and empathy. The activities arose from a gathering of students earlier in the year who considered the impact of the global refugee crisis as part of “Refugee Conversations”.

Students held a bake sale to raise funds for refugee charities and provided set of useful Ukrainian phrases to help buy the sweet treats. Many students baked for the event, including icing in blue and yellow and making traditional Ukranian dishes.

During lunchtime, Ukrainian staff and students sang traditional songs accompanied by a Ukrainian musician on the bandura, the national instrument of Ukraine. Students also had the opportunity to light candles and write prayers for peace.

The College has welcomed several Ukrainian staff and students over the last year, some of whom told their stories today. Student Yulia spoke about her experiences: “appreciate every minute of your life, I have not seen my grandparents and friends for over a year. I just want to hug them.”
