Recently the college hosted their annual celebratory lunch for the students who were going onto competitive courses, universities, and apprenticeships after finishing at Hereford Sixth Form College. Students came to celebrate varied offers from Imperial College London to study a Computer Science Masters Degree, Politics and International Relations at Durham University, a GAP year teaching in Cambodia, to a BA Hons in Acting with Fourth Monkey Drama School. The college has huge success in preparing students for all the options post sixth form, be that work with training, university, or apprenticeships.

The college makes sure that students have world class resources and support to apply to the places of their choice. Rhodri, who has been offered a place on a Musical Theatre degree at the prestigious conservatoire, Bird College, said “spaces like the dance studio helped me develop more whenever I could. Alongside my teachers’ advice, we also had some alumni students who talked about their previous experience, which offered great insights”. Students took part in workshops from top drama schools, and many take part in the college’s Upstage Production Company to give them professional level experience of Arts careers.

Alongside the college’s creative students, the college continues to have success with Sports’ careers and apprenticeships. Oakley has been offered a place at the hugely competitive Loughborough University in Sports’ Management. Likewise, Immy is in the college’s Rugby Academy, and has been awarded a financial scholarship to study Criminology at the University of Bristol. She said “support from my coaches helped me balance my academics and my rugby!” Apprenticeships are also still very popular choices, with James (Accountancy) and Maisie (Policing) both celebrating going onto these. Maisie said that “I always wanted a career that would have an impact, and college lessons really solidified that I wanted to do a degree without getting the debt!”

STEM Careers continue to be hugely popular for students. Again, Hereford outperforms many of the top institutions in the country with our medics receiving an 87% offer rate against a national average of 27%, and our vets receiving 60% offers with national average below 50%. Erin has an offer from the University of Glasgow for Medicine said, we had “many lessons on the UCAT, and three practice interviews! These improved my confidence and chances.” Huge numbers of students have success across all the STEM fields, from Biochemistry at Birmingham, Biomedical science at Warwick, to Chemistry at UCL, and one student, Erinn, who has an offer for a Masters in Clinical Psychology at the University of Exeter. Likewise, Dan has been awarded a place in a cyber security role with the Royal Signals. He said that “all my teachers have been incredibly helpful. The college has been a key part of my development as an individual”.

The college’s broad range of subjects help develop students’ passions. Daisy is going to study German and Italian at St Andrews, she said that “HSFC’s amazing language department allowed me to undertake the subjects I needed.” Other students are going on to Geology at Durham, Primary Teaching at Gloucester, Law with a year abroad at Liverpool, English Literature with Creative Writing at Birmingham, and Ruby, who went to a talk with Project Trust who helped her find her GAP year provider.

The range of courses of Hereford Sixth Form’s students continues to be a highlight for Vicky Orsmond, who oversees progression. She said: “Our students are so incredible, and the Careers department and teachers help students find and apply, successfully, for top courses in the UK and abroad. It is wonderful to be part of an institution which helps students find their passion. I am so proud of them all.”
