At the end of the Summer Term, elite mathematicians and athletes from years 7, 8 and 9 in Herefordshire Schools took part in Hereford Sixth Form College’s Maths Square-Off.
The Maths Square-Off is an annual competition in which each team solves a range of mathematical problems. Once the answer has been agreed, the runner submits the answer to a judge.
Nearly 20 teams participated from both comprehensive and independent schools within the county, each group comprising 4 young mathematicians.
Mathematics Tutor, Ajay Pindoria said, “The competition aims to create a sense of enthusiasm and excitement for young mathematicians. The purpose is to bring the best mathematicians from all over the county to have fun, to collaborate and compete at a high level. There was a fantastic buzz in the hall and students had a great time working together on some really tough questions against the clock.”
The competition was won by Team A from Lady Hawkins’ School – Reuben Brown, John Irwin, Daniel Startin and Jordan Thomas. With a tense play off for 2nd and 3rd position taking place between Wigmore School and St Mary's RC High School.
The winning team was asked to cut the ribbon and officially open the College’s new £1.3 million mathematics centre.
Jonathan Godfrey, Principal, said, “I was delighted to invite the Maths Square-Off winners to open our new Maths Block. Mathematics is one of the largest departments in the College with a national reputation for the quality of its work. The Department was graded Outstanding by OFSTED in the last College inspection and has superb results with an excellent record of preparing students for Oxbridge entry.”
