Hereford Sixth Form College has been shortlisted out of over 250 schools and colleges, to be considered for the Aspire ‘School of the Year’ at the 2022 Student Social Mobility Awards. The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony at the House of Lords in July.

‘Aspire by UpReach’ is a charity that helps students with inspiration and advice about university and career options. The Aspire ‘School of the Year’ award recognises “a secondary school or college that has made outstanding efforts to boost the career aspirations of students. This could be through the creation or adoption of programmes that serve to broaden career horizons, boost aspirations or facilitate the future success of students.”

This achievement marks Hereford Sixth Form College as an educational institution that enables its students aim for the top universities, apprenticeships, and jobs. Peter Cooper, the Principal said: “I’m delighted that our strong inclusive ethos has been recognised. We are a college that values and encourages all our students to aim to really fulfil their potential.”

To be shortlisted for this national award is recognition of the work of the Careers Department at Hereford Sixth Form College, where a team of specialists are dedicated to supporting students with their career progression. In particular, the College’s Reach programme helps students, regardless of background, consider and apply for the top universities, apprenticeships, and courses.

Vicky Orsmond, Senior Progression Lead and creator of the Reach programme said that “It’s fantastic we have been shortlisted for this award. I feel passionately about social mobility, and that all my wonderful students, regardless of background, should be able to see themselves as able to compete with the best for top universities, courses and work.”
