Programmes for High Flyers: Academic Masterclasses
A taste of university life!
Hereford Sixth Form College runs Academic Masterclasses in a range of subjects to give students a taste of university lectures.
These extension lessons are delivered at Hereford Sixth Form College by our own staff, with the option of using material designed and provided by Cambridge. The masterclasses are open to all Reach students and are designed to stretch students beyond A Level specifications.
When are these masterclasses?
The students attend three lectures in a subject of their choice on Wednesday afternoons, between February to April. Each lecture is around 1.5 hours in length.
What subjects are on offer?
We normally offer around 12 subject choices. Subjects vary year to year, dependent upon specialisms, but can include lectures in Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Law and International Politics, History of Art, Archaeology, Geology, English Literature, Philosophy and Spanish, as well as others. We also have two Medical Masterclasses on offer which are very popular and these Masterclasses are delivered by senior medics in their fields from local hospitals or medical practices.
How to get involved?
Students are able to sign up for masterclasses in January of Year 1. Subject choices will be discussed in Reach lessons. There are three masterclasses to attend; and if students have signed up, attendance to all three is compulsory.
Can students take part in Reach and the Academic Masterclasses?
Yes, absolutely. The Academic Masterclasses run in parallel with Reach lessons. Reach lessons are timetabled within the College day. The masterclasses run on Wednesday afternoons, normally from 2.00pm - 3.30pm.
If students have other commitments on Wednesday afternoons, such as sport or musical commitments, they will still have Reach lessons. We send information regularly about university webinars, lectures and taster days that they can attend instead.
