Careers
The Careers Department's main purpose is to help you with the difficult choices that face you concerning higher education and employment. Six internal Careers Tutors, with the help of a visiting Connexions PA, ensure that information and advice is readily available when you need it, either as a member of a group or on an individual basis, through a programme of Careers education and guidance.
Careers education covers issues of relevance to all students such as application procedures and the opportunities available. This normally takes place during Careers lessons but may be supplemented by visiting speakers, trips to university open days and the opportunity to attend a large higher education convention. In addition, work experience and community placements can be arranged for students.
Careers guidance, on the other hand, is concerned with individual choices. The basis of careers guidance is a one-to-one interview which allows you the opportunity to explore and discuss your personal career plans and to take appropriate action. Careers interviews can be booked in the Careers Library, or alternatively there are informal drop-in sessions most afternoons. The Department has close links with Connexions who offer support and guidance in general, but especially for those students wishing to enter employment. Employment workshops, seminars and links with local employers are also available to these students.
The College has an extensive Careers reference library which you are encouraged to use in your own time.
The Careers Department recognises the key role parents play in the education and employment decisions of their daughters and sons. With this in mind, two evening meetings are held each year to keep parents fully informed. In addition to this, parents are very welcome to consult the College Careers Tutors at any time.
