Conservation Expeditions
In conjunction with Operation Wallacea, students from the College have participated in three successful expeditions. The first was to Honduras in 2005 when students monitored the species diversity of rainforests in different regions of the country. The second expedition, in 2007, involved working with the University of Havana to monitor the nesting behaviour of marine turtles in Cuba. The third in 2010 focused on conservation strategies for big game in South Africa. As part of the expeditions, the students became qualified SCUBA divers and then took part in dives at research sites on the coral reefs.
The next expedition, planned for 2012, will be to monitor biodiversity, including monitoring lemurs, in Madagascar. The expedition will last approximately two weeks, with one week in the forest, followed by a week on the coast diving. Whilst places will be limited, the expedition will be open to all students as all relevant training, including dive training, will be provided. All that is required is enthusiasm and a good level of physical fitness.
