Prospective Students: Our Courses

GCSE English

student taking part in English

The GCSE English course offers opportunities for developing the complementary skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Understanding creative texts - this new English course focuses upon the study of three texts: a play by Shakespeare, a text from the English Literary Heritage and a text from a different culture.

Producing creative texts - you will complete two pieces of creative writing under controlled assessment conditions.

Speaking and listening - you will be assessed on three equally weighted activities: presenting skills, discussing and listening skills and your role play ability.

Understanding and producing non-fiction texts - both reading and writing skills are assessed in this two hour external examination.

Qualifications

You will normally have taken GCSE English at your previous school, although this is not always the case.

Study Visits / Fieldwork

You are encouraged to take part in appropriate theatre trips and workshops when available. A practical approach to Shakespeare texts is also encouraged. One of the Speaking and Listening assignments has a role-play focus, so practical skills in front of a small audience are very welcome.

After the Course

GCSE English at C grade or above is a core requirement for the marjority of higher education courses and also for many careers.
