Prospective Students: Our Courses

AS/A Level Sociology

student taking part in Sociology

Sociology is the study of how society works. You will debate ideas about human behaviour, poverty, crime, mass media and social change. Sociology makes you think. It forces you to question your own ideas and beliefs as well as giving you a better understanding of the society in which you live.

Qualifications

We assume no previous knowledge of Sociology but you do need the ability to cope with abstract ideas and to produce good written English.

Study Visits / Fieldwork

In the second year, students are given the opportunity to visit Prague for four days. This includes the opportunity to see the Museum of Communism and the Terezin concentration camp. The Department has hosted Sociology seminars which have been led by the Chief Examiner for AQA Sociology. There may also be visits to student conferences or the cinema when relevant documentaries or films are released.

After the Course

Recently, former Sociology students have gone on to study a wide range of subjects including Anthropology, Criminology, Drama, Politics & International Relations and Psychology.

Sociology is also studied as part of the training for many professions, for example business management, advertising, teaching, nursing, law, the police and social work.
