AS/A Level Psychology

Psychology can be defined as the scientific study of behaviour and experience. It includes consideration of both animals and humans, and of normal and abnormal behaviour. Psychology deals with scientific research. This includes studying theories and considering the relevance of research studies.The main topics in the AS course include: memory and eye-witness testimony; attachment and the effects of day care; stress and stress management; conformity and obedience; and explaining and treating psychological abnormality. At A2, you will study explanations and treatments for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), media psychology, biological rhythms, sleep, relationships and aggression. Both AS and A2 Psychology include the study of relevant research methods, investigation design, data analysis and data presentation. You will develop an understanding of potential ethical issues in Psychology and ways in which psychologists deal with these issues. There is no coursework in this subject.
Qualifications
This course does not require you to have any previous knowledge of the subject but you do need the ability to understand theories and concepts and to produce good written English. You will also need to demonstrate competence in appropriate areas of Mathematics relevant to Psychology.
Study Visits / Fieldwork
There are no compulsory visits, but you will have the opportunity to attend conferences and lectures.
After the Course
Psychology should prove useful to you if you are planning a career in social work, teaching, nursing or business. Most of our students progress to studying at degree level.
