Prospective Students: Our Courses

AS/A Level Government & Politics

student taking part in Government & Politics

Politics is the study of how we are governed. This means that we look at how we elect MPs and form governments (particularly interesting in 2010), how Parliament works, the role of the courts, what the parties stand for, the power of the Prime Minister, etc.

Not surprisingly, the study of Politics often leads to argument and debate. For example: Should the system of election be changed? Should Parliament be reformed? What do the parties stand for?

In the second year (A2) we study American Politics. Again, the emphasis is on the contemporary and in addition to looking at the structure of government we look at such issues as civil rights, civil liberties, abortion and gun control.

Qualifications

You do not need any specific qualifications but as Politics is rooted in the present, an interest in current affairs and discussing the issues in the news would be an advantage.

Study Visits / Fieldwork

The Department takes a group of students to a European study weekend in Paris each year.
