AS/A Level English Literature

On this course you will study a variety of modern and historical prose, poetry and drama, including the work of William Shakespeare. 40% of the final grade will be from coursework, 60% from the final exam. As well as extending your knowledge and enjoyment of literature, you will develop skills of thinking critically, reading and analysing texts closely and preparing arguments.
Qualifications
Although students with a higher tier grade C in GCSE English do sometimes take this course, it is more suited to those with a grade B and above. The ability to work independently, read widely and write extended essays is essential
Study Visits / Fieldwork
The department organises visits to study days, theatres and workshops to support work on the texts studied and to prepare for the examinations.
After the Course
English is a useful subject if you are thinking of a degree in Law, Publishing, Education, Creative Writing, Media Studies, Drama, History and any of the Social Sciences, as well as the many courses which have English as an element.
