AS/A Level English Language

The course explores both spoken and written language in use. You will learn to analyse systematically how language works in a wide range of texts and transcripts. You will investigate many of the important language issues in society. How do children learn to speak? How do politicians influence our attitudes and values through language? Why do people speak differently in London and Liverpool? Are men and women represented differently through language? How has technology influenced our language? You will also learn to become a more confident writer, adapting your style to suit different audiences and purposes.
Qualifications
Although students with a higher tier grade C in GCSE English do take this course, it is more suited to those with a grade B and above. A foreign language at GCSE is also very useful.
Study Visits / Fieldwork
Visits to lectures and external events relevant to examination topics are offered.
After the Course
Language and language skills are relevant to all academic and vocational subjects. You can go on to take a specialist degree in English Language, Language and Communications or Linguistics, or other courses such as Law, Drama, Education, History or any of the Social Sciences. Career possibiities for English specialists range from teaching, journalism and publishing to speech and language therapy.
