Prospective Students: Our Courses

AS/A Level Chemistry

student taking part in Chemistry

Chemistry aims to explain the properties of substances in terms of the particles they are made of: atoms, molecules and ions. You will learn a lot of fundamental theory, including ideas about the structure of atoms, the nature of the bonds that can exist between them and the importance of energy in governing the reactions that may take place. You will also learn about patterns of reactivity in both organic and inorganic Chemistry. Some of the course is necessarily underpinned by calculations - you will learn to understand and predict many of the changes that take place in chemical processes using straightforward mathematical methods. Chemistry is also a practical subject and your learning will be supported by laboratory work wherever possible.

Qualifications

As a minimum, you will require B grades in both GCSE Science and Additional Science (or in two separate sciences, including Chemistry). You should also have at least a grade B in GCSE Maths.

After the Course

AS or A level Chemistry is essential or desirable for a wide range of higher education Science courses and is highly regarded as a basis for any non-scientific course or career.
