Prospective Students: Our Courses

AS/A Level Applied Science

This course is one of a suite of vocationally-focused AS/A levels designed to develop knowledge and practical skills in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, in a range of work-related contexts.

Two thirds of the course focuses on producing coursework portfolios, making it ideal if you enjoy independent learning and are well organised. The two portfolio units require you to investigate how science is used in the work place and to research different techniques which are used to analyse and identify different chemical compounds.

The examined unit will assess understanding of the human circulatory / respiratory systems and energy transfer systems in the home and industry.

Qualifications

You should have at least a grade C in both GCSE Science and Additional Science (or in two separate sciences). You should also have at least a grade C in GCSE Maths. You should be well organised in order to meet portfolio deadlines.

Study Visits / Fieldwork

There is an emphasis on the development of practical skills and research. The course will involve visits to local industry.

Students go on to study a wide range of subjects in higher education such as Radiography, Nursing and Midwifery. The course is excellent for students considering a laboratory-based career. Technicians work in a range of industries - the NHS, forensics and education to name but a few.
