AS/A Level German
The course aims to develop a high level of competence in understanding, speaking and writing German and a deeper knowledge of the culture and civilisation of Germany. You will cover topics at AS dealing with 21st Century issues: leisure, education and social issues. At A2, media, environmental issues and contemporary Germany are also studied. Magazines, newspapers, radio and TV programmes, videos and films are used for classroom and research activities. You will also have access to modern technology including a language laboratory, the Internet and satellite television.
German makes you think. It encourages you to question your own ideas, put your own point of view across and offers you the chance to understand German society and culture more deeply.
Qualifications
Past experience has shown that for this course you need at least a grade B in German GCSE and at least a grade B in English Language GCSE. You will also need a strong interest in German and a commitment to the study of the German language and culture.

Study Visits / Fieldwork
You will have the opportunity to take part in special German topic awaydays, hosted by various universities, and you will be encouraged to take part in the 'Your Future in Europe' Conference, held each year in Paris. You will also be strongly encouraged to take part in a week-long residential study visit to Augsburg, where you will be taught by native speakers.
After the Course
German can help you gain access to top jobs in business, banking/finance, journalism, law, public relations, travel and the Civil Service. German students have gone on to study a wide range of subjects in higher education and some have chosen to specialise in German. The knowledge of a European language enhances your confidence and social skills and increases your career prospects in the European and global market-place.
